VIP Venepuncture & Cannulation Training do not provide supervision of practice. It is the responsibility of each practitioner to undertake supervised practice and final assessment within their work place.

10.45 Anatomy & Physiology – How to locate veins & vein selection
11.15 Practical – placement of a tourniquet, location & palpation of veins
11.30 Venepuncture & Cannulation – The procedure: Patient, Safer Sharps, Infection Control, ANTT The equipment: Methods
12.15 Care & Management of a peripheral vascular access device
12.30 Break for Lunch
13.00 Local & systemic complications of venepuncture & cannulation
13.45 Venepuncture – Practical on manikin limbs
15.00 Cannulation – Practical on manikin limbs

There is a practical session on how to apply a tourniquet and select veins, also methods of improving difficult vein location. Provided with the training is an Assessment Document that facilitates demonstration of knowledge, supervised practice and final assessment. A USB memory stick with the handouts on is provided and a certificate of attendance.

The training is founded on the following:

  • NICE clinical guideline 139 and epic3: National evidence-based guidelines for preventing healthcare-associated infections in NHS hospitals in England] 2014
  • RCN Standards for intravenous therapy 2010 – this document clearly states the knowledge and training a professional requires all of which is included in this training day.
  • High Impact Intervention 2005 – Peripheral Intravenous cannula care bundle – this is a requirement of the Health & Social Care Act 2008: Code of practice on the prevention & control of infections & related guidance 2010
